Thoughts on the Boating Life

Happy New Year to all of you.

We received some special thoughts on the boating life from Anne Cox this morning. Long time member and enthusiastic supporter of NWWB, Anne achieved her dream of buying a boat (a 27′ Ranger tug) and moving aboard with her dog, Gus. She is now living onboard in San Diego but brings here boat up to the Northwest for summer cruising.

The fog is thick here on Shelter Island as 2013 fades away. The friendly horn steadily sounds a reassuring voice during this moist and thick darkness.

Tucked inside Cascadia I recall living on the water during this year just ending…

Seeing herons, ducks, pelicans, grebes and other birds, seals, sea lions, dolphins, sea otters and various fish… a constant reminder we are all sharing the sea.

Recalling outings on the water with family members and friends, smiling at the memories…

Remembering trips throughout the Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands, swimming with Gus in the warm freshwater lakes of Desolation Sound, finally getting to Princess Louisa, by ourselves…

Finding the Strait of Georgia flat, traveling southward, down the middle of it,seeing all the way to Vancouver to the east, the international waterway to the south and the mountains of Vancouver Island to the west seemed unimaginable…until Gus and I did it.

Racing sunset and losing, getting to Sucia and tying up in the dark after that amazing 10 hour day on the boat…feeling it again.

Looking ahead to the year beginning here along the Pacific Coast, finding myself surrounded by books of voyages near and far, covering maritime adventures from various centuries, including Great Voyages in Small Boats, The Hidden Coast, North to the Night, Voyages to Windward, Two Years Before the Mast, Seeking Western Waters and Watertrail…

Mingling in guidebooks such as The South Coast of British Columbia, The North coast of British Columbia and Exploring Southeast Alaska, building new dreams…

Adding  Beginnings, A Meditation on Coast Salish Lifeways and Daughters of Copper Woman to hear and experience NW tales…

Dreaming beyond this dark and foggy night in San Diego as 2014 is born…
